The replacement bill on an Audi
A new DPF from an Audi dealer rarely comes cheap. On the smaller EA189 and EA288 four-cylinder cars, A3, A4, Q3 and Q5, an OEM filter fitted at a dealer typically runs to £1,200 to £1,500 or more once labour is added; on the larger V6 and V8 cars, A6, A8, Q7 and Q8, the bigger exhaust layout pushes some quotes higher still. Independents can often manage the aftermarket part for £800 to £1,000 fitted, but that's still a four-figure decision for a filter that, in most cases, isn't actually broken.
The honest split: a blocked Audi filter, one simply carrying more soot than the ECU wants to see, responds to a chemical clean at £275. A physically cracked or melted filter doesn't. The two look identical from the driver's seat, which is why a dealer quoting for a new filter without checking which one you've got is worth a second opinion.

A3 (2003 onward)
8P 1.9 and 2.0 TDI PD then EA189 from 2008, 8V 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA189 then EA288 from 2015. The smallest-displacement cars in the range, and the quickest to show a DPF light on short urban runs.
A4 (2005 onward)
B7 2.0 TDI PD, B8 EA189 and 3.0 TDI V6, B9 EA288 and 3.0 TDI EA897. Three engine generations across three body shapes, each with its own regen behaviour.
A5 (2007 onward)
B8 2.0 and 3.0 TDI EA189, B9 2.0 TDI EA288 and 3.0 TDI EA897. Shares its underpinnings with the A4 of the same generation.
A6 (2011 onward)
C7 EA189 then EA288, 3.0 TDI EA897, C8 EA288 evo and EA897 evo. A high-mileage executive car, often PCO or fleet-run, that shows up regularly in our diary.
A8 (2010 onward)
D4 3.0 TDI EA897 and 4.2 TDI V8, D5 50 TDI 3.0 V6. Audi's flagship, and the model where a dealer replacement quote runs highest.
Q3 (2011 onward)
8U 2.0 TDI EA189, F3 35 and 40 TDI EA288 evo. The smallest SUV in the range, and the most short-run sensitive.
Q5 (2008 onward)
8R 2.0 TDI EA189, FY 40 and 45 TDI EA288 evo and 3.0 TDI V6. A popular family SUV with a wide spread of ages on the road.
Q7 (2006 onward)
4L 3.0 TDI V6 EA896 then EA897 from the 2011 facelift, and 4.2 TDI V8, 4M 45 and 50 TDI EA897 evo. The largest SUV, less prone to short-run blocking but not immune on school-run duty.
Q8 (2018 onward)
45 and 50 TDI 3.0 V6 EA897 evo. The newest model in the range, with the thinnest fault record so far.
What happens on the day
We come to the vehicle wherever it's parked, run a diagnostic to confirm the soot load and any stored codes, then introduce the cleaning agent through the DPF's existing service ports. A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, followed by a differential pressure check to confirm flow has been restored. Codes are cleared and the warning light is off before we leave. The whole visit takes roughly 90 minutes, and the filter never comes off the car.
