The 8R's EA189 is the engine most likely to arrive with a fault after a run of short trips, a pattern owners across the Volkswagen Group range will recognise. The FY's EA288 evo four-cylinders catch it slightly earlier in most cases, while the 3.0 TDI V6 has more thermal headroom but isn't immune on a car doing mostly the school run.
How the clean is done on a Q5

Does the regen system differ between Q5 engines?
Yes, to a degree. The 8R's EA189 relies purely on exhaust temperature and drive cycle timing developed for an earlier generation of emissions control, while the FY's EA288 evo runs a more refined strategy that, on some applications, uses a twin-stage regen. The 3.0 TDI V6's larger displacement gives it more thermal headroom, so it tends to warn later than the four-cylinder units on the same driving pattern. None of this changes the fix: whichever engine, a blocked filter responds to the same chemical clean.
