The replacement bill on a Volvo
A new DPF from a Volvo dealer is not a small bill. On the older five-cylinder D5, D4 and D3 units, fitted across the range up to about 2013 to 2015 depending on model, an OEM filter fitted at a dealer typically runs to £1,200 to £1,500 or more once labour is added; the newer VEA four-cylinder engines are usually a little cheaper to source. Independents can often manage the aftermarket part for £800 to £1,000 fitted, but that's still a four-figure decision for a filter that, in most cases, isn't actually broken.
The honest split: a blocked Volvo filter, one simply carrying more soot than the ECU wants to see, responds to a chemical clean at £275. A physically cracked or melted filter doesn't. The two look identical from the driver's seat, warning light, reduced power, sometimes limp mode, which is exactly why a dealer quoting for a new filter without checking which one you've got is worth a second opinion.

V60 (2010 onward)

V90 (2016 to 2022)

XC60 (2008 onward)
Mk1 2.4 D5/D4/D3 five-cylinder to 2015 then VEA D4 from 2014, Mk2 VEA D4 and D5 through to Volvo's diesel phase-out in early 2024. Volvo's most common SUV on this list, and the one we quote for most often.
XC90 (2002 onward)
Mk1 2.4 D5 five-cylinder, Mk2 VEA D5 through to Volvo's last diesel car, built in February 2024. Volvo's flagship SUV, with the same generational engine split as the XC60.
What happens on the day
We come to the vehicle wherever it's parked, run a diagnostic to confirm the soot load and any stored codes, then introduce the cleaning agent through the DPF's existing service ports. A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, followed by a differential pressure check to confirm flow has been restored. Codes are cleared and the warning light is off before we leave. The whole visit takes roughly 90 minutes, and the filter never comes off the car.
