The replacement bill on an A8

A new DPF on a flagship saloon is never a small bill. On the D4's 4.2 TDI V8, an OEM filter fitted at a dealer typically runs to £1,200 to £1,500 or more once labour is added, and the D5's 50 TDI can price similarly given the exhaust layout on a large executive car. Independents can often do the aftermarket part for less, usually £800 to £1,000 fitted, but that's still a four-figure decision for a filter that, in most cases, isn't actually broken.

The honest split: a blocked A8 filter, carrying more soot than the ECU is happy with, responds to a chemical clean at £275. A physically cracked or melted filter doesn't, and the two look identical from the driver's seat, warning light and reduced power, which is exactly why a dealer quoting for a new filter without checking which one you've got is worth a second opinion.

Cleaning is the right first call for an A8 filter that's blocked rather than damaged, and that covers most of the DPF warnings we see on this car. Replacement only becomes necessary once a filter has physically failed. Delete is for a vehicle that will never go back on a public road, not a fit for a daily-driven flagship saloon.

A8 engines covered

D4 (2010 to 2017): 3.0 TDI EA897, 4.2 TDI V8

The 4.2 TDI V8 is the more expensive engine to have replaced at a dealer given the extra labour and parts cost of the larger unit, while the 3.0 TDI V6 is generally the cheaper of the two. Both are non-additive, relying on exhaust temperature and drive cycle for regen.

D5 (2017 onward): 50 TDI 3.0 V6

The newest engine in the range, sharing its EA897 evo architecture with the Audi Q8, which carries the same regen strategy. It has the thinnest fault record on this site so far, but the same soot-versus-damage split still applies. See our Audi DPF cleaning hub for the wider range.

What happens on the day

We come to the A8, run a diagnostic to confirm the soot load and any stored fault codes, then introduce the cleaning agent through the DPF's existing service ports. A controlled engine sequence works it through the filter, followed by a pressure check to confirm the result before we clear the codes. Roughly 90 minutes from arrival to a clear warning light.

Cost questions on the A8

Why is £275 cheaper than a garage DPF clean on an A8?
A fixed mobile price with no premises overhead and no separate diagnostic fee. We come to the car rather than the car coming to us, which keeps the cost down without cutting corners on the process.
Is it ever worth going straight to replacement on an A8?
Only once a filter has physically failed rather than simply loaded with soot, and that's confirmed by a diagnostic, not assumed from the warning light. Most A8s we see haven't reached that point.
Will cleaning definitely avoid a replacement bill on my A8?
In most cases, yes, because most blocked filters are dirty rather than damaged. If a filter has already physically failed before the clean, no chemical treatment will fix that, and we'll say so honestly if that's what the diagnostic finds.
Is the price the same whichever engine my A8 has?
Yes. £275 fixed whether you're running the V6 or the V8. The engine only affects what a replacement would cost elsewhere, not what our clean costs.
Is a DPF delete legal on a road-going vehicle?
No. DPF delete is for off-road, track and agricultural use only. It is illegal to delete the DPF on a vehicle used on public roads in the UK, it will fail the MOT, and it can invalidate your insurance. If your vehicle is road-going, our DPF cleaning service is the right option.
