Why DPFs block up
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot from the exhaust before it reaches the atmosphere. At intervals, usually on longer motorway runs, the engine runs a regeneration cycle that burns off the accumulated soot, clearing the filter automatically.
The problem is that many diesel vehicles spend most of their time on short urban trips, stop-start commutes, or delivery routes that never get long enough or hot enough for a full regen to complete. Soot builds up faster than it burns off, the filter becomes restricted, and the engine management system detects the blockage and limits power to protect the engine.
Left long enough, the filter blocks completely. At that point the engine may refuse to start, or will only run in a heavily restricted mode with very little power.
What a chemical clean involves
A DPF chemical clean uses a specialist chemical solution introduced directly into the filter, which breaks down and dissolves the hardened ash and soot deposits that a standard regen cycle cannot remove. Unlike a forced regen, it works on filters that are too blocked for the engine to regenerate on its own.
We carry out the full procedure at your location using professional-grade equipment. The chemical is left to dwell in the filter, then flushed through, carrying the deposits out with it. A flow test before and after confirms the filter has been successfully cleaned.
The result is a DPF that flows freely again, without the cost or waste of a full replacement.
