How the Q7 gets used
Most Q7s on the road around Manchester earn their keep as the family car that does everything: school runs morning and afternoon, the weekly shop, ferrying kit to weekend sport, the odd trip to the airport. It's a lot of driving over a year, but a good share of it is short and local, engine barely warmed through before the next stop.
That's the pattern that catches the Q7 out. Both the V6 and V8 diesels need a sustained spell of load and speed to get the exhaust hot enough for a regen to complete. A big SUV doing the school circuit rarely delivers that, however many miles it clocks up in total, so the filter can load with soot even on a car that looks, on the surface, like a high-mileage motorway workhorse.
What changes after the clean
The warning light goes out, the flat spot under acceleration disappears, and the car stops dropping into limp mode with a boot full of kit. Exhaust flow through the filter is restored, the fault codes are cleared, and the Q7 goes back on the road the same visit. No trip to a dealer, no van left overnight waiting on parts, no juggling the school run around a garage booking.

4L (2006 to 2015): 3.0 TDI V6, 4.2 TDI V8
The V6 moved from the EA896 to the EA897 generation at the 2011 facelift, both non-additive and relying on exhaust temperature for regen. The 4.2 TDI V8 is the less common fault engine of the two, its larger displacement giving more thermal headroom, but a school-run pattern still catches it.
