Which engine is in your A5

Two generations of A5, and a handful of diesel engines across them, each behaving slightly differently once the filter starts to load.

EngineA5 generationYearsDPF/regen note
2.0 and 3.0 TDI EA189B82007 to 2016Common-rail injection, no additive fluid, short-run urban blocking is the usual pattern
2.0 TDI EA288B92016 onwardNo additive; twin-stage regen strategy on some Euro 6 applications
3.0 TDI EA897B92016 onwardLarger unit, higher exhaust temperature under load, less prone to blocking on mixed driving

The B8's EA189 units are the ones most likely to arrive with a fault after a run of short trips, a pattern owners across the Volkswagen Group range will recognise. The B9's EA288 and EA897 catch it slightly earlier in most cases, but neither is immune on a car used mainly for short commuter runs into Manchester or Salford.

How the clean is done on an A5

The process is the same across every engine in the range, carried out wherever the car is parked rather than at a garage.

A diagnostic read confirms the soot load and pulls any stored fault codes before work starts.

The chemical cleaning agent is introduced through the DPF's existing service ports, no removal, no ramp.

A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the filter substrate, typically 60 to 90 minutes on site.

A post-clean differential pressure check confirms exhaust flow has been restored across the filter.

Stored fault codes are cleared and the warning light goes out before we leave.

Which of these does your A5 need

Most A5 DPF warnings are a soot problem, and our clean and DPF repair are the same £275 fixed service under either name. Replacement only becomes the right call once a filter has physically cracked or melted, something a diagnostic confirms rather than assumes; see DPF cleaning vs replacement for the full cost picture.

Does the regen system differ between A5 engines?

Yes, to a degree. The EA189 relies purely on exhaust temperature and drive cycle timing developed for an earlier generation of emissions control, while the EA288 fitted from the B9 onward runs a more refined strategy that, on some applications, uses a twin-stage regen. The 3.0 TDI EA897's larger displacement gives it more thermal headroom, so it tends to warn later than the four-cylinder units on the same driving pattern. None of this changes the fix: whichever engine, a blocked filter responds to the same chemical clean. A5 engine questions

Which engine is in my A5, and does that change the price?
No. It's £275 whichever engine your A5 has, the 2.0 or 3.0 TDI across either generation. Check your V5C or reg if you're not sure which unit is fitted; we'll confirm it as part of the diagnostic.
Is the additive fluid (sometimes called Eolys) relevant to my A5's DPF?
No. None of the A5's TDI engines use an additive-assisted regen system. All rely on exhaust temperature and drive cycle alone, so an Eolys top-up isn't part of what fixes a blocked filter on this car.
Does the clean affect the turbo or the EGR system on an A5?
No. The chemical flush targets the DPF substrate only, introduced through the filter's own service ports. The turbo and EGR system aren't touched during the process.
Can you tell from the fault codes alone which engine my A5 has?
Not reliably. P2463 and P2002 are common across the range, since they describe the filter's condition rather than the engine driving it. We'll confirm the engine from the reg or V5C before booking the job.
Is a DPF delete legal on a road-going vehicle?
No. DPF delete is for off-road, track and agricultural use only. It is illegal to delete the DPF on a vehicle used on public roads in the UK, it will fail the MOT, and it can invalidate your insurance. If your vehicle is road-going, our DPF cleaning service is the right option.
