DPF cleaning vs replacement: which do you need?
If your DPF warning light has come on, you're likely facing one of two options: a chemical clean or a full replacement. They're very different in cost. Here's an honest guide to help you decide which one applies to your situation.
What does DPF replacement actually cost?
A replacement DPF fitted at a garage typically costs £800 to £1,000 for an aftermarket part, or £1,200 to £1,500 or more for an OEM part fitted at a dealer. That figure covers the filter itself and the labour to remove the old one and fit the new one. On prestige vehicles (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Land Rover) costs can go higher depending on the complexity of the exhaust system and parts availability.
It's a sizeable bill. And in many cases, it's not necessary.
When cleaning is the right answer
The majority of DPF faults are caused by soot and ash accumulation. The filter hasn't failed, it's simply become blocked. This is especially common in vehicles used mainly for short, low-speed journeys that don't give the engine a chance to reach the temperature needed for a self-regeneration cycle.
A chemical flush breaks down that blockage, clears the filter, and restores normal operation. This resolves most DPF faults. Our mobile clean costs £275, fixed price, no call-out fee, carried out at your home or workplace.

When replacement is the right answer
There are cases where cleaning won't help. If the ceramic core inside the filter has cracked, melted, or physically broken down, usually due to an overheated forced regeneration or a previous failed attempt to clean a severely blocked filter, no chemical flush will restore it. Likewise, if a filter has been cleaned several times and continues to block quickly, it may have reached the end of its serviceable life.
In those situations, replacement is the correct solution. We'll tell you if that's what we're seeing. We won't carry out a clean and take your £275 if the filter needs to come out.
