The replacement bill on an A3
A new DPF on an A3 is not a small bill. Priced through a dealer, an OEM filter fitted typically runs to £1,200 to £1,500 or more once labour is added, more again on the earlier 8P if the exhaust has corroded around the housing. Independents can usually do the aftermarket part for less, generally £800 to £1,000 fitted, but that's still a four-figure decision either way for a filter that, in most cases, isn't actually broken.
Most blocked A3 filters are carrying too much soot for the ECU's liking, not physically damaged. A dealer quoting straight for a new part without checking which condition you've actually got is worth a second opinion before you sign anything.

Cleaning is the right first call for an A3 filter that's blocked rather than damaged, and that covers the large majority of the DPF warnings we see on this car. Replacement only becomes necessary once a filter has physically failed, something a proper diagnostic check confirms rather than assumes. Delete is for a vehicle that will never see a public road again, not for a daily-driven A3.

8P, 1.9 and 2.0 TDI PD, then EA189 from 2008 (2003 to 2012)
The 8P's pump-düse diesels have patchy early DPF fitment; where fitted, there's no additive fluid and regen relies on exhaust heat alone, so a hard blockage can build before an early warning shows. From 2008 the range moved to the common-rail EA189, which gives the ECU better regen timing but is still no stranger to a DPF light after a run of short trips.
8V, 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA189, then EA288 from 2015 (2012 to 2020)
The 8V continued the EA189 before switching to EA288, both non-additive units sharing an engine family with the Audi Q3 8U. Whichever generation you're running, replacement pricing depends on which unit is fitted rather than the badge alone; we confirm this from the reg before quoting the clean.

What happens on the day
