BMW DPF cleaning

N47 2.0d, 1 Series, 3 Series, X1, X3 (pre-2015) The N47 is the most DPF-sensitive engine in the BMW range in our experience. It is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel found in a wide range of models, and in city use it accumulates soot quickly. The regen cycle requires a sustained period at higher engine load and temperature, conditions that commuting, school runs, and urban errands rarely provide. The N47 was produced until around 2015, when it was replaced by the B47.

Models include: 118d, 120d, 316d, 318d, 320d, 325d (E90/F30), X1 xDrive18d/20d, X3 xDrive18d/20d (F25).

B47 2.0d, current 1, 3, 4, 5 Series, X1, X3 (2015 onwards) The B47 replaced the N47 and is a more refined unit, but it shares the same DPF vulnerability in urban duty cycles. If anything, BMW's emissions compliance targets mean the B47's DPF management is more aggressive, and the ECU is quicker to flag a fault when regen conditions are not met. B47 faults are increasingly common as the engine becomes more prevalent on UK roads.

N57 3.0d and B57 3.0d, 5 Series, X5, X3 30d The N57 and its successor the B57 are six-cylinder diesel units found in the 530d, X5 xDrive30d, X3 M40d, and similar models. DPF faults on these engines are less common than on the four-cylinder units, as they tend to see more varied driving, but they do occur, particularly on X5s and 5 Series used predominantly in urban areas.

Models include: 520d, 525d, 530d (F10/G30), X5 xDrive30d/40d (F15/G05), X3 30d.

This is the first thing many BMW owners try when the DPF warning comes on, a long run at motorway speeds to trigger a regen. And for a mild blockage where soot load is elevated but not critical, it can work. The regen requires exhaust temperatures above around 550-600°C, which a sustained motorway cruise at 60-70 mph in third or fourth gear can achieve.

The problem is that most BMW drivers do not know how blocked the filter actually is until the warning light appears, and by that point soot load is often well past the level where a passive motorway regen will be sufficient. If the motorway run has not cleared the light, it is unlikely that another one will. The ECU will log the failed regen attempt and the soot load data will tell us what we are dealing with when we run the diagnostic.

For a heavily blocked DPF, a chemical flush is the appropriate treatment. The cleaning solution breaks down soot that has built up beyond what regen temperature can clear, allowing it to pass through the filter. Post-treatment, the fault codes are reset and the DPF system returns to normal operation.
