Mercedes Sprinter DPF cleaning

The Mercedes Sprinter is a workhorse, reliable, capable, and popular across delivery, construction, and trades. It is also one of the most common DPF fault vans we see. The OM651 engine is well-engineered, but its DPF regen system is sensitive, and Sprinters doing short urban runs block up repeatedly.

Cleaning the Mercedes Sprinter DPF

If your Sprinter is showing a DPF warning light, running in limp mode, or has lost power on local routes, you are in the right place.

Which Sprinter and Vito engines do we cover?

OM651 2.1 CDI, Sprinter 313, 314, 316 CDI The OM651 is the engine in the vast majority of Sprinters on UK roads. It is a 2.1-litre four-cylinder unit and it is, in our experience, the single most common DPF fault engine we work on across the entire commercial van sector. The regen cycle is tightly controlled by the ECU, and in urban use, particularly stop-start delivery or trades work, it rarely gets the conditions it needs to complete a successful regeneration. Soot accumulates, the ECU logs a fault, and the Sprinter goes into limp mode.

All 313, 314, and 316 CDI variants are covered, across W906 and W907 body generations.

OM651 in the Mercedes Vito The Vito shares the same OM651 engine family as the Sprinter. DPF fault patterns are essentially identical, the same duty-cycle sensitivity, the same fault codes, the same susceptibility to short-journey use. If you are running a Vito on local routes and the DPF warning has come on, the process is exactly the same as for the Sprinter.

OM642 3.0 V6 CDI, Sprinter 319 CDI The OM642 V6 is found in the more powerful Sprinter 319 CDI. It is a less common fault vehicle than the OM651, but DPF blockages do occur, particularly on higher-mileage vehicles or those used on mixed duty cycles without regular long runs. The OM642 is covered.

Why does the Sprinter DPF block so often?

The OM651 regen system relies on precise conditions: exhaust temperature above a certain threshold, engine load in the right range, and a drive cycle long enough for the regen to run to completion. Urban and local work, deliveries, builders, mobile tradespeople going between short jobs, rarely meets all three conditions at once.

The Sprinter's ECU will attempt active regen when soot load reaches a certain level, but if the journey ends before the regen completes, soot load stays high and the process has to start again next time. After enough incomplete attempts, the ECU decides the DPF is blocked and flags a fault.

This is not a defect in the engine or the van. It is a mismatch between the technology and the duty cycle. Understanding that is important because it tells you what will and will not fix the problem.

Why a forced regen at a garage often does not work

Many Sprinter owners come to us having already paid a garage to perform a forced regen. A forced regen, where a diagnostic tool commands the engine to run a high-temperature regen cycle, works well for lightly blocked filters where soot load is elevated but not critical. The problem is that many Sprinters that have been flagging the DPF warning and running in limp mode have a soot load that is well beyond what a forced regen can clear. The filter is too restricted for the regen to run effectively, or the soot has partially hardened (a condition sometimes called ash loading) and will not burn off with heat alone.

A chemical flush works differently. The cleaning solution is introduced into the DPF and works on the soot chemically, breaking it down and allowing it to pass through the filter rather than relying on incineration. For heavily blocked filters, which is what most Sprinters present with by the time the warning light is on, chemical cleaning is significantly more effective than a forced regen.

Our mobile Sprinter DPF cleaning service

We come to your location across Greater Manchester and surrounding areas. No recovery truck, no leaving the van at a garage overnight. The service is carried out at your yard, your site, or wherever the Sprinter is parked.

The service includes:

The price is £275, fixed, no callout fee, no extras. We have carried out over 7,000 treatments across the SGR Automotive group.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Sprinter DPF block so often?
The OM651 engine's regen system needs sustained high exhaust temperatures and a long enough drive cycle to complete a regeneration. Urban deliveries, trades work, and short local runs do not provide those conditions. Soot accumulates faster than it can be burned off, and the filter blocks. It is a duty-cycle issue, not a fault with the van.
Will a forced regen fix my Sprinter DPF?
For a mildly elevated soot load, possibly. For a Sprinter that is already in limp mode with a DPF warning light on, a forced regen often does not work. The filter is too restricted for the regen to run effectively. A chemical flush is the more reliable option for heavily blocked filters because it breaks down soot chemically rather than relying on heat alone.
Do you cover the Vito as well?
Yes. The Mercedes Vito uses the same OM651 engine family as the Sprinter. DPF fault patterns are essentially identical, and the chemical flush treatment is the same process. All Vito variants with the 2.1 CDI engine are covered.
Is the Sprinter DPF easy to access for a chemical flush?
Yes. The chemical flush method does not require DPF removal. The treatment is introduced through the existing DPF system. This is what makes the mobile service possible. There is no need to put the van on a ramp or strip any components.
