Blocked DPF: symptoms, causes, and how we fix it
Your diesel particulate filter is designed to trap the soot and ash your engine produces. Over time, especially if the vehicle spends most of its life on short journeys or city roads, that build-up accumulates faster than the filter can clear itself, and the result is a blocked DPF.
What causes a DPF to block?
The most common culprit is driving style. Diesel particulate filters regenerate (burn off accumulated soot) automatically, but only when the exhaust reaches a high enough temperature, which typically requires a sustained run at motorway speeds. Short trips, stop-start commuting, and lots of urban driving mean regeneration never completes properly, and soot builds up with every journey.

Symptoms of a blocked DPF
A partially blocked DPF often goes unnoticed at first. As the restriction worsens, you are likely to see one or more of the following:
DPF warning light
on the dashboard
Engine management light (EML)
triggered by associated fault codes
Limp mode
the engine management system limits power to protect the engine
Loss of power and acceleration
, particularly under load
Black or sooty smoke
from the exhaust, especially on startup or hard acceleration
Increased fuel consumption
as the engine works harder against the restriction
What happens if you ignore a blocked DPF?
A partially blocked filter can often be cleaned. A completely blocked or damaged one usually cannot, and replacement costs typically run £800 to £1,000 for aftermarket parts, or £1,200 to £1,500+ from a main dealer, depending on the vehicle.
The longer a blocked DPF is left, the harder it becomes to resolve without replacing the unit. Forced regeneration stops working once the soot loading passes a certain threshold. At that point, cleaning is the only option before replacement becomes unavoidable.
