Is DPF removal legal in the UK?
No. Removing a DPF from a road-going vehicle has been illegal in the UK since 2014. This page sets out exactly what the law says, what the consequences are, and what your legal options are if your DPF is causing problems.
The law
Under the Road Traffic Act and related legislation, it is illegal to use a vehicle on a public road in a condition that does not comply with its original emissions equipment specifications. For diesel vehicles, that includes the DPF.
The ban on DPF removal came into effect in February 2014, following a change to MOT testing rules introduced by the DVSA. Since that date, MOT testers have been required to check for the presence of a DPF on all diesel vehicles that were fitted with one when new.
The check has two components:
A vehicle that fails either check on DPF grounds receives an automatic MOT failure. This is not a discretionary call by the tester. It is a legal requirement.
A visual inspection to confirm the DPF is present in the exhaust system
An emissions test at idle

The fine
The DVSA can issue a fixed penalty of £1,000 for a car, or £2,500 for a van, to any vehicle owner found driving on a public road without a DPF that the vehicle was originally fitted with.
This is separate from MOT failure. A vehicle can be stopped at the roadside and penalised without any MOT test being involved. DVSA enforcement officers carry out targeted checks, and DPF removal is a known target for enforcement activity.
Our position
We do not remove DPFs from road-going vehicles. Full stop.
We are aware that there is a market for this service and that it is possible to find garages willing to do it. Our view is that the risk sits entirely with the vehicle owner: criminal liability, MOT failure, fines, potential insurance invalidation, and no short-term benefit outweighs that.

The legal alternative
If your DPF is blocked, causing limp mode, or failing regeneration, the legal and correct fix is a professional chemical clean.
