Kia Sportage DPF cleaning
1.6, 1.7 and 2.0 CRDi across two generations. Mobile chemical flush through the DPF's existing service ports, £275.
Which engine is in your Sportage
| Engine | Sportage generation | Years | DPF/regen note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.7 CRDi D4FD | SL | 2010 to 2016 | No additive fluid; smaller displacement more sensitive to short-run blocking |
| 2.0 CRDi D4HA | SL | 2010 to 2016 | No additive fluid; higher exhaust output copes better with stop-start driving |
| 1.6 CRDi | QL | 2016 onward | No additive fluid; newer common-rail unit, same soot-loading pattern on short trips |
| 2.0 CRDi | QL | 2016 onward | No additive fluid; best placed of the QL engines for sustained motorway regen |
Across both generations the pattern is consistent: none of these engines uses an additive fluid, so recovery from a blockage depends entirely on driving conditions.
The smaller-displacement options in each generation, the 1.7 on the SL and the 1.6 on the QL, tend to show a DPF warning sooner on a mostly urban Sportage than the 2.0 does under the same conditions, simply because there's less exhaust heat to work with.
How the clean is done on the Sportage
Same process whichever engine is fitted and whichever generation you're driving, carried out at your home, workplace or wherever the Sportage is parked.
Diagnostic read to confirm the soot load and pull any stored fault codes.
Cleaning agent introduced through the DPF's existing service ports, no part removed from the car.
Controlled engine sequence to work the agent through the filter substrate, roughly 60 to 90 minutes.
Post-clean differential pressure check to confirm flow has improved.
Fault codes cleared and the warning light switched off before we leave.
Which of these does your Sportage need
Most Sportage DPF faults come from a soot blockage rather than a broken filter, so a clean or repair, the same £275 fixed service under two names, is usually the right first step whichever engine you have. Replacement only applies if the filter is physically cracked or melted, typically £800 to £1,000 aftermarket fitted or £1,200 to £1,500-plus for an OEM part at a dealer, see our replacement cost comparison.
Does the regen system differ between Sportage engines?
Not fundamentally. All four engine options across the SL and QL generations rely on exhaust heat rather than an additive fluid, so a motorway run helps any of them in broadly the same way. The practical difference is timing: the smaller-displacement unit in each generation reaches the temperature it needs less easily on a short trip, so it tends to flag a fault sooner than its larger-displacement stablemate on the same mostly-urban driving pattern. Dash warnings look the same regardless of which engine is fitted.
