Kia Sorento DPF cleaning
Warning light after a run of school pick-ups and short local trips, power dropping soon after. On a Sorento that's soot, not damage. Mobile chemical flush at your location, £275.
Why the Sorento keeps flagging a DPF fault
The Sorento's diesel engines are built for towing and longer family journeys, and they cope well when they get the sustained run those jobs involve. The trouble is a large seven-seat SUV like this also does a lot of its miles on shorter local trips, the school run, the supermarket, ferrying kids between activities, where the exhaust rarely holds the temperature a full regen cycle needs for long enough.
The dash typically shows a DPF warning light first, sometimes with a slight loss of smoothness under load before anything more obvious happens. Left unaddressed, power usually drops off further within a day or two, settling into a restricted, low-rev state as the car protects itself from a filter that's carrying more soot than the ECU is comfortable with.
The D4HB and D4HA diesel engines fitted across Sorento generations are shared widely with other Hyundai and Kia SUVs, which means their DPF behaviour is well understood at engine-family level even where model-specific detail is thinner. Both store P2463 once soot passes the modelled threshold, and P2002 if filter efficiency has already started to fall.
Sorento engines and DPF fault codes
XM, 2010 to 2014: 2.2 CRDi D4HB and 2.0 CRDi D4HA
The first generation covered here was offered with either the larger 2.2 or the smaller 2.0 diesel, both sharing the same regen strategy.
UM, 2015 to 2020: 2.2 CRDi D4HB
The second generation carried the 2.2 through its full run, shared with the Hyundai Santa Fe of the same era.
MQ4, 2020 onward: 2.2 Smartstream D4HE
The current generation moved to Kia's newer Smartstream diesel, which follows the same basic soot and regen behaviour as the units before it.
All Sorento diesel engines are covered by the £275 clean. See our full Kia range we cover.
What a chemical flush fixes on a Sorento
The clean answers exactly the pattern described above: soot and ash that a regen cycle never got hot enough or long enough to burn off on a mixed towing-and-school-run driving pattern. The cleaning agent breaks the deposits down inside the filter, the filter stays fitted throughout, and once flow through the substrate is restored, the stored fault codes clear and the warning light goes out.
Clean, repair, replacement or delete on a Sorento
Repair is the same £275 chemical-flush service as a clean, not a distinct process, so there's no separate charge for it. Replacement only makes sense if the filter is physically cracked or melted, typically £800 to £1,000 fitted aftermarket or £1,200 to £1,500-plus for an OEM part at a dealer, see our replacement cost comparison.
Questions Sorento owners ask
