Which DPF service does your Carens need
Most Carens DPF faults are a soot blockage rather than a broken filter, so a chemical clean, or repair, the same service under a different name, at £275 fixed is usually the right first call. Replacement only applies if the filter is physically cracked or melted, typically £800 to £1,000 aftermarket fitted or £1,200 to £1,500-plus for an OEM part at a dealer, see our replacement cost comparison.
How the Carens gets used
As a seven-seat family MPV, the Carens spends most of its life doing exactly the driving that a DPF struggles with: school runs, activity drop-offs, supermarket trips, short journeys with the engine barely up to temperature before it's switched off again. It's rarely bought for a long daily commute, so the sustained motorway stretch that would help the filter clear itself naturally doesn't come round often.
The 1.7 CRDi D4FD engine is capable enough on a longer run, but a Carens used mainly for local family duties fills the filter with soot faster than the engine gets the chance to burn it back off.
What changes after the clean
The warning light goes off, power returns to normal, and any flat spot or limp mode disappears. The filter flows properly again and regenerates as designed, including on the shorter school-run and errand trips that caused the problem in the first place. The Carens is back on the road the same visit.
