Cleaning the Fiat Tipo DPF
We come to you across Greater Manchester and the surrounding area, no removal and no trip to a garage.
Which engine is in your Tipo
| Engine | Tipo generation | Years | DPF/regen note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.3 Multijet II | Mk1 (UK launch) | 2016 onward | No additive fluid; smaller displacement makes it more sensitive to short-run blocking |
| 1.6 Multijet II | Mk1 (UK launch) | 2016 onward | No additive fluid; larger displacement copes slightly better with stop-start driving |
Both units are common-rail Multijet II diesels, so the regen strategy is broadly the same across the range. The difference is in how quickly each one struggles on a diet of short trips.
The 1.3 has less cylinder volume to push exhaust gas temperature up, so a Tipo doing mostly local runs, drop-offs and short commutes tends to show a DPF warning sooner than the 1.6. Neither engine uses an additive fluid to assist regeneration, so once the filter starts loading, it relies entirely on getting hot enough for long enough to burn the soot off unaided.
How the clean is done on the Tipo
Same process whichever Multijet II engine is under the bonnet. It's carried out at your home, workplace or wherever the Tipo is parked, and the car is driveable again as soon as we're done.
Diagnostic read to confirm the soot load and pull any stored fault codes.
Cleaning agent introduced through the DPF's existing service ports, no part removed from the car.
Controlled engine sequence to work the agent through the filter substrate, roughly 60 to 90 minutes.
Post-clean differential pressure check to confirm flow has improved.
Fault codes cleared and the warning light switched off before we leave.
Which of these does your Tipo need
Most Tipo DPF faults are a soot blockage rather than a broken filter, so a chemical clean or repair at £275 fixed is the right first step, and it's the same service whichever engine you have. Replacement is only worth considering if the filter is physically cracked or melted, which a diagnostic will confirm; typical fitted cost runs from around £800 to £1,000 aftermarket up to £1,200 to £1,500 or more for an OEM part at a dealer, so it's worth ruling out a clean first. See our replacement cost comparison.
Does the regen system differ between Tipo engines?
Not by much. Both the 1.3 and 1.6 Multijet II run the same common-rail injection and passive-then-active regen strategy, so a motorway run helps either engine burn off soot in broadly the same way. The practical difference owners notice is timing rather than process: the 1.3, with less exhaust heat to work with on a short trip, tends to flag a fault after fewer miles of pure town driving than the 1.6 does under the same conditions. Neither engine gives an early warning that reads differently on the dash, and both store the same P2463 and P2002 codes once the filter is overloaded.
