Volvo S60 DPF cleaning
2.4 five-cylinder D5 on the older P2, then D2 to D5 across the P3, VEA from 2013. Mobile chemical flush through the DPF's existing service ports, £275, wherever the car is parked across Greater Manchester. Call 0161 694 7331.
Which engine is in your S60
Two very different eras of Volvo diesel have worn the S60 badge, and knowing which one you've got changes how the DPF tends to behave.
| Engine | S60 generation | Years | DPF/regen note |
|---|---|---|---|
| D5 2.4 five-cylinder | P2 | 2000 to 2010 | No additive fluid; regen relies on exhaust temperature alone |
| D2, D3, D4, D5 (pre-VEA) | P3 | 2010 to January 2014 | Same five-cylinder architecture carried into the early P3 |
| VEA 2.0 four-cylinder D2, D3, D4, D5 | P3 | 2013 onward | Newer, smaller-displacement engine family with a different regen calibration |
The older five-cylinder unit is a known quantity, no additive, straightforward exhaust-temperature-led regen. The VEA engines that replaced it from around 2013 are shared with the V60, V90, XC60 and XC90, and bring a different, tighter Euro 6 regen strategy. See our Volvo V60 DPF cleaning page, which shares this VEA family, or our Volvo DPF cleaning hub for the full range.
How the clean is done on the S60
The process is the same whether it's an older five-cylinder D5 or a newer VEA-engined S60, since the flush targets the filter rather than anything specific to one engine generation.
A diagnostic read confirms the soot load and pulls any stored codes, typically P2463 or P2002.
The chemical agent goes in through the DPF's existing service ports, no removal from the car.
A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, roughly 60 to 90 minutes.
A post-clean differential pressure check confirms the filter is flowing properly again.
Stored codes are cleared and the warning light goes off before we hand the car back.
Which of these does your S60 need
Most S60s that come to us need a clean rather than a new filter, £275 fixed whether it's a clean or a repair, the same job either way. Replacement is only worth it once a filter is physically cracked or melted, and an aftermarket part fitted independently usually still beats a dealer quote (see our replacement cost comparison).
Does the regen system differ between S60 engines?
The older 2.4 five-cylinder and the newer VEA four-cylinder both run without an additive fluid, so the same advice applies to either: a sustained motorway-speed run helps, short local hops don't. Where they differ is in how the fault tends to present. The five-cylinder's older, simpler calibration can mean a harder blockage before the light comes on. The VEA engine's tighter Euro 6 strategy generally warns earlier and more consistently, though the exact difference in warning threshold between the two eras isn't something we'd state as a fixed figure.
