Volvo XC90 DPF cleaning
2.4 five-cylinder D5 on the original XC90, VEA D5 from the 2015 relaunch. Mobile chemical flush through the DPF's existing service ports, £275, wherever the car is parked across Greater Manchester. Call 0161 694 7331.
Which engine is in your XC90
Two very different generations of XC90, two different diesel engines, and both behave a little differently once the filter starts to load.
| Engine | XC90 generation | Years | DPF/regen note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2.4 D5 five-cylinder | Mk1 | 2002 to 2014 | No additive fluid; regen relies on exhaust temperature alone |
| VEA D5 2.0 four-cylinder | Mk2 | 2015 to February 2024 | Newer, smaller-displacement engine with a tighter Euro 6 regen calibration |
The original Mk1's five-cylinder D5 is a straightforward, no-additive unit that most independent garages know well by now. The Mk2, relaunched in 2015 with the newer VEA engine, brings a different regen strategy, shared with the S60, V60, V90 and XC60. See our Volvo XC60 DPF cleaning page, which shares this VEA family, or our Volvo DPF cleaning hub for the full range.
How the clean is done on the XC90
The process is the same whether it's a Mk1 running the older five-cylinder D5 or a Mk2 with the newer VEA unit, since the flush targets the filter rather than anything specific to one engine generation.
A diagnostic read confirms the soot load and pulls any stored codes, typically P2463 or P2002.
The chemical agent goes in through the DPF's existing service ports, no removal from the car.
A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, roughly 60 to 90 minutes.
A post-clean differential pressure check confirms the filter is flowing properly again.
Stored codes are cleared and the warning light goes off before we hand the car back.
Which of these does your XC90 need
Most XC90s that come to us need a clean rather than a new filter, £275 fixed whether it's a clean or a repair, the same job either way. Replacement is only worth it once a filter is physically cracked or melted, and an aftermarket part fitted independently usually still beats a dealer quote (see our replacement cost comparison).
Does the regen system differ between XC90 engines?
Both the older five-cylinder D5 and the newer VEA D5 run without an additive fluid, so the same practical advice applies to either: a sustained motorway-speed run helps, short school-run driving doesn't. Where they differ is in warning behaviour. The Mk1's older calibration tends to run a fairly conservative strategy, flagging a fault reasonably early. The Mk2's tighter Euro 6 calibration can mean the dash stays quiet slightly longer before the light appears, so a Mk2 XC90 can arrive with more soot on board than the warning light alone suggests.
