Peugeot 308 DPF cleaning

The Peugeot 308 is one of the most frequently booked vehicles on our call list. Both the Mk1 (2007-2013) and Mk2 (2013-2021) share a diesel particulate filter system that is well-known for blocking, particularly in cars driven mostly in towns and cities. If your 308 has thrown up a DPF warning light, gone into limp mode, or is showing a fault code for excessive soot load, you are far from alone. We offer a mobile chemical flush service across Greater Manchester, no garage visit, no tow truck, and a fixed price of £275.

Why the 308 DPF blocks so easily

The engines involved

The 308 diesel range covers two main units: the 1.6 HDi (DV6 engine family) and the 2.0 HDi (DW10 engine family). Both are PSA designs that use a diesel particulate filter as standard, and both share the same fundamental weakness when it comes to regeneration.

Regeneration is the process where the ECU raises exhaust temperatures to burn off the soot collected in the DPF. For this to work, the car needs a sustained period of higher-speed driving, typically 15 to 20 minutes at motorway or dual-carriageway speeds. If most of your journeys are short urban runs, the filter never gets hot enough to clear itself, and soot builds up layer by layer until the car flags a blockage.

The 308 is commonly used as a commuter and family car around Greater Manchester. School runs, supermarket trips, and short motorway stints of only a few miles are exactly the driving profile that causes problems.

The Eolys additive system explained

Both the DV6 and DW10 engines in the 308 use a fuel-borne additive called Eolys, which is part of the PSA/Stellantis approach to DPF regeneration. Eolys is a cerium-based fluid stored in a separate tank, usually located in the boot area or under the boot floor. The system doses a small quantity of Eolys into the fuel tank each time you fill up.

The purpose of the additive is to lower the ignition temperature of soot inside the DPF, making it easier for the filter to regenerate at lower exhaust temperatures than would otherwise be needed. When the Eolys tank runs low or empties completely, the soot inside the DPF can no longer combust efficiently during a regeneration attempt. The filter then continues to load up with soot regardless of how much motorway driving you do.

Many 308 owners are unaware that the Eolys tank needs periodic refilling. It is not a service item on most standard service schedules, and garages do not always flag it. If your car has had its Eolys tank run dry for an extended period, the DPF may be significantly more loaded than normal.

We check Eolys status as part of our diagnostic process and will advise you on the next steps if the tank needs attention.

What the warning signs look like

Typical indicators that your 308 DPF needs attention include:

If you are seeing any of these, the sooner the filter is cleaned the better. A heavily loaded DPF that is ignored can eventually become fully blocked, at which point chemical cleaning alone may not be sufficient and the filter may need replacing.

  • The DPF warning light illuminating on the dashboard (often an outline of a car with dots beneath it)
  • A coil spring or engine management light alongside the DPF light
  • Noticeable loss of power or the car entering a restricted performance mode
  • Increased fuel consumption without any change in driving habits
  • A strong sulphurous or burning smell from the exhaust, particularly on startup

Our mobile chemical flush service

We come to your home, workplace, or any convenient location across Greater Manchester and the surrounding area. The process involves connecting diagnostic equipment to read live soot load data, applying a specialist chemical cleaning solution directly to the DPF, and running the engine through a forced regeneration cycle to clear the accumulated soot.

Most visits take between 45 minutes and 90 minutes. There is no need to arrange a garage appointment or leave the car anywhere. The fixed price is £275, which covers the chemical flush, the forced regeneration, and a post-clean diagnostic confirmation. There are no hidden charges.

Frequently asked questions

Will cleaning the DPF fix the warning light?
In most cases, yes. Once the soot load drops below the threshold the ECU monitors, the warning light clears automatically. We confirm this with a live diagnostic reading before we leave.
Does the Eolys additive need topping up at the same time?
We will advise you on Eolys level as part of the visit. If it needs refilling, that is a separate job, but we can point you in the right direction.
How long will the filter last after a clean?
With a change in driving habits, including regular longer runs, a cleaned DPF can last several years. If driving patterns stay the same (predominantly short urban journeys), the filter may block again within 12 to 24 months.
Do you cover the 308 SW estate?
Yes. The estate shares the same drivetrain as the hatchback and is fully covered by the same service and price.
What if the DPF is too blocked to clean chemically?
We will tell you honestly if we believe the filter is beyond chemical treatment. In that scenario, replacement is the appropriate next step and we will give you our assessment clearly before any work proceeds.
