Citroen and Peugeot have shared their diesel engine architecture for decades. The C4 Mk1 (2004-2010) and Mk2 (2010-2018) both use engines from the same PSA family as the 308, the 207, the Berlingo, and numerous other models. The two engines you will find in diesel C4 variants are:
1.6 HDi (DV6): The most common diesel engine in the C4 range and across the wider PSA line-up. Excellent fuel economy on longer runs, but genuinely sensitive to short-journey use. The DPF on the DV6 relies on consistent higher-speed driving to regenerate properly, which many C4 owners simply do not do regularly enough.
2.0 HDi (DW10): Found in higher-specification C4 models and the larger Picasso variants. The DW10 is a more capable unit that suits motorway and longer-distance driving well. However, it is still subject to the same regeneration cycle requirements, and owners who use the 2.0 HDi predominantly in urban settings report the same DPF fault patterns as the 1.6.
Understanding that this is a platform-wide characteristic rather than a fault specific to your individual car is useful context. The DPF system on these engines performs well when the driving conditions suit it. The issue arises when the car is used in ways its DPF system was not optimised for.
The Eolys additive system on the C4
Like the Peugeot models that share the same engines, the Citroen C4 diesel uses the Eolys additive system. A dedicated tank holds cerium-based fluid that is metered into the fuel each time you fill up. The Eolys works by reducing the combustion temperature of soot inside the DPF, making it easier for the filter to regenerate.
When the Eolys tank empties, soot can no longer combust efficiently during a regeneration cycle. The DPF then loads up more quickly than it should, regardless of whether the driver is making regular longer journeys. Many C4 owners are surprised to learn this system exists at all. It is not flagged prominently at service, and the tank can run dry without any obvious dashboard warning on some variants.
