Why trade vans suffer more than most
A Berlingo used in trade or delivery work spends most of its life doing exactly what a DPF hates. Short site hops between jobs, engine idling while loading and unloading, cold starts for brief runs to a single address, and then back to base. None of these patterns give the exhaust system enough sustained heat to carry out a regeneration.
A diesel particulate filter cleans itself through a process called regeneration, where exhaust temperatures rise high enough to burn off accumulated soot. On a van doing multiple short drops in a day, the ECU will attempt to trigger a regeneration but rarely has the time to complete one before the engine is switched off again. Incomplete regenerations are almost as unhelpful as no regeneration at all, because they leave the filter in a partially loaded state and can introduce extra fuel into the oil.
Over weeks and months of this kind of use, the filter reaches a point where it can no longer manage its own cleaning, and a manual intervention is needed.
Engines covered
1.6 HDi: Found across the Mk2 Berlingo (2008-2018). The DV6 unit is a well-regarded PSA diesel in normal conditions, but its DPF is sensitive to operating pattern. The 1.6 HDi is the most common engine we see on Berlingo callouts.
1.5 BlueHDi: Introduced on the Mk3 Berlingo (2018 onwards) as a more modern, lower-emission unit. The BlueHDi system adds a diesel oxidation catalyst and an SCR system with AdBlue alongside the DPF. While the BlueHDi is more sophisticated, the DPF element still blocks in the same way when the driving profile does not allow regeneration. AdBlue and SCR faults can sometimes accompany DPF issues on these later vans. We will flag any related fault codes during our diagnostic check.
