Which engine is in your Land Cruiser

Two generations, two diesel engines, and both carry the same basic regen behaviour with only a modest difference in how they show a fault.

EngineLand Cruiser generationYearsDPF/regen note
3.0 D-4D 1KDJ1202003 to 2009No additive fluid; regen relies on exhaust temperature alone
3.0 D-4D 1KDJ150 (early)2009 to 2015Same 1KD unit carried into the J150 body, same regen behaviour
2.8 D-4D 1GDJ150 (later)2015 onwardNewer common-rail unit, shared with the Hilux Mk8 from 2016

The 1KD ran largely unchanged across both generations, so a J120 and an early J150 behave much the same way under a heavy soot load. The 2.8 1GD that replaced it from 2015 is a newer design, shared with the current Hilux, and known for EGR carbon build-up sitting alongside DPF soot loading as a separate but related fault. See our Toyota Hilux DPF cleaning page for that shared engine, or our Toyota DPF cleaning hub for the full range.

How the clean is done on the Land Cruiser

The whole visit works the same way whether it's a J120 running the 1KD or a newer J150 with the 2.8 1GD, since the flush targets the filter itself rather than anything specific to one engine.

A diagnostic read confirms the soot load and pulls any stored codes, typically P2463 or P2002.

The chemical agent goes in through the DPF's existing service ports, no removal from the vehicle.

A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, roughly 60 to 90 minutes depending on how heavily loaded the filter is.

A post-clean differential pressure check confirms the filter is flowing properly again.

Stored codes are cleared and the warning light goes off before we hand the truck back.

Which of these does your Land Cruiser need

Most Land Cruisers that come to us need a clean rather than a new filter, £275 fixed whether it's described as a clean or a repair, the same job either way. Replacement is only worth it once a filter is physically cracked or melted, and an aftermarket part fitted independently usually still beats a dealer quote (see our replacement cost comparison).

Does the regen system differ between Land Cruiser engines?

Where they differ is how loudly they warn. The older 1KD tends to run a fairly conservative warning strategy, flagging a fault reasonably early. The 1GD's tighter Euro 6 calibration can mean the dash stays quiet for slightly longer before the light appears, so a 1GD Land Cruiser can arrive with a heavier soot load than the warning light alone would suggest.

Land Cruiser engine questions

Which engine is in my Land Cruiser, and does that change the price?
No, £275 whichever engine, the 3.0 1KD or the 2.8 1GD. Check your V5C or registration if you're not sure which unit is fitted, though it makes no difference to the cost or the process.
Is the additive fluid (sometimes called Eolys) relevant to my Land Cruiser's DPF?
No. Neither the 1KD nor the 1GD uses an additive fluid, so an Eolys warning or top-up isn't part of the Land Cruiser's DPF story. The regen strategy relies purely on exhaust temperature.
Does the clean affect the turbo or the EGR system on a Land Cruiser?
No, the flush targets the DPF substrate only. On the 1GD, EGR carbon build-up is a separate, related fault worth checking alongside a DPF diagnostic, but the chemical clean itself doesn't touch the turbo or the EGR valve.
Can you tell from the fault codes alone which engine my Land Cruiser has?
Not reliably. P2463 and P2002 turn up on both the 1KD and the 1GD, so the fault codes tell us there's a blockage, not which engine is under the bonnet. We confirm that from the reg or the V5C before the visit.
Is a DPF delete legal on a road-going vehicle?
No. DPF delete is for off-road, track and agricultural use only. It is illegal to delete the DPF on a vehicle used on public roads in the UK, it will fail the MOT, and it can invalidate your insurance. If your vehicle is road-going, our DPF cleaning service is the right option.
