SEAT Leon DPF cleaning
Pump-düse, EA189 or EA288. Mobile chemical flush through the DPF's existing service ports, £275. Call 0161 694 7331.
Which engine is in your Leon
Four generations of TDI on the Leon, and each one behaves slightly differently once the filter starts to load.
Mk2: 1.9 and 2.0 TDI PD, 2005 to 2008
The earliest DPF-equipped Leons run pump-düse injection, with no additive fluid. Regen relies purely on exhaust temperature, so these cars are the most likely to arrive with a hard blockage rather than an early warning.
Mk2: 1.9 and 2.0 TDI EA189, 2008 to 2012
The same body shifted to VW Group's EA189 common-rail engines partway through the Mk2's life. Common-rail injection gives the ECU better regen timing than PD, catching a rising soot load earlier.
Mk3: 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA189, 2012 to 2015
The Mk3 launched on the same EA189 family before switching engines partway through its run, much like the outgoing Mk2 had done.
Mk3: 1.6 and 2.0 TDI EA288, 2015 to 2020
From 2015 the Mk3 moved to VW Group's EA288 unit.
Mk4: EA288 evo, 2020 onward
The current Leon runs the latest evolution of the EA288 family. It's the newest generation on this page, so the fault record is thinner than the earlier engines. The same EA288 evo family is shared with the SEAT Ateca; see our SEAT DPF cleaning hub for the rest of the range.
How the clean is done on the Leon
A diagnostic read confirms the soot load and any codes stored against your Leon's engine.
The chemical agent goes in through the DPF's existing service ports, with no removal from the car.
A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, roughly 60 to 90 minutes.
A post-clean differential pressure check confirms flow has been restored.
Stored codes are cleared and the warning light goes off before we leave.
Which of these does your Leon need
Most Leons that come to us with a DPF light need a clean rather than a new filter. £275 fixed covers the chemical flush, whether it's described as a clean or a repair; they're the same process. Replacement is only worth considering once a filter is physically cracked or melted, not simply blocked with soot, and even then an aftermarket part fitted independently usually beats a dealer quote (see our replacement cost comparison).
Does the regen system differ between Leon engines?
Yes, more than on most single-generation models. The pump-düse Mk2 has no additive fluid and relies entirely on exhaust temperature, which means it can build a hard blockage before the driver gets much warning. The common-rail EA189 and EA288 engines that followed give the ECU earlier and more accurate warning of a rising soot load, so the light tends to appear sooner but the filter is usually easier to recover. None of these engines use an additive fluid, so a motorway run helps every generation, provided it's long enough to hold a sustained exhaust temperature.
