Jaguar XF DPF cleaning
£275 once. Or a garage bill running into four figures for a new filter you probably don't need. Mobile chemical flush, we come to you.
The replacement bill on an XF
A new DPF on an XF isn't a small bill. On the X260's 2.0 Ingenium D, an OEM filter fitted at a dealer typically runs to £1,200 to £1,500 or more once labour is added; on the older X250's 3.0 V6 D, the exhaust layout makes the job longer still. Independents can often do the aftermarket part for less, usually £800 to £1,000 fitted, but that's still a four-figure decision for a filter that, in most cases, isn't actually broken.
The honest split is straightforward: a blocked XF filter, one simply carrying more soot than the ECU is happy with, responds to a chemical clean at £275. A physically cracked or melted filter doesn't, and no clean will fix it. The two look identical from the driver's seat, warning light, reduced power, sometimes limp mode, which is exactly why a dealer quoting for a new filter without checking which one you've got is worth a second opinion.
Clean, repair, replace or delete
| Option | Typical cost | What it fixes | Road-legal? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clean/repair | £275 fixed | Clears a soot blockage restricting exhaust flow | Yes |
| Replacement | £800 to £1,500+ fitted | Needed only if the filter is physically cracked or melted | Yes |
| Delete | Call to discuss | Removes the DPF from the software permanently | No |
Cleaning is the right first call for an XF whose filter is blocked rather than damaged, and that covers most of the faults we see. Replacement only becomes necessary once a filter has physically failed. It doesn't suit a road car carrying a routine fault code, which a clean resolves instead. Repair is simply the search term some owners use; the job itself is the same £275 chemical flush, priced and carried out identically to a clean. See our full replacement cost comparison for more detail.
XF engines covered
X250, 2008 to 2015: 2.2 D DW12 and 3.0 V6 D
Like the later Ingenium D, the 2.2 D DW12 uses no additive fluid, relying on exhaust temperature alone for regen. The 3.0 V6 D in the same generation produces more exhaust heat under load, generally giving it more margin before a filter blocks.
X260, 2015 onward: 2.0 Ingenium D and 3.0 V6 D (to 2020)
The Ingenium D covers most of the current-generation range and, being the smaller four-cylinder unit, tends to flag a fault sooner on a mostly urban XF than the V6 does.
All XF diesel engines are covered by the same £275 fixed clean. See our full Jaguar range we cover.
What happens on the day
We arrive at your home, workplace or wherever the XF is parked, run a diagnostic to confirm the soot load and stored codes, then introduce the cleaning agent through the DPF's existing service ports. A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the filter, we check the result with a post-clean pressure test, then clear the codes. Roughly 90 minutes from start to finish.
