Which DPF service does your XE need
Most XE DPF faults are a soot blockage rather than a broken filter, so a chemical clean, or repair, the same service under a different name, at £275 fixed is usually the right first call. Replacement only applies if the filter is physically cracked or melted, typically £800 to £1,000 aftermarket fitted or £1,200 to £1,500-plus for an OEM part at a dealer, see our replacement cost comparison.
How the XE gets used
The XE covers a lot of company car and private commuter mileage, and much of that comes down to how the driver splits their week between a longer motorway leg and shorter trips around the office car park, client visits or the school run. On weeks with a genuine daily motorway stretch, the Ingenium D engine gets plenty of chance to run a proper regen. On weeks made up mostly of shorter journeys, home working days broken up by local errands, the filter starts loading without the sustained exhaust heat it needs to clear itself.
It's a car that often gets driven hardest on paper mileage and softest in practice, low-speed, low-load driving that does the DPF no favours regardless of the total distance covered each month.
What changes after the clean
The warning light goes off, power returns to normal, and any hesitation under load or limp mode disappears. The filter flows properly again and regenerates as designed, including on the shorter local trips that caused the problem in the first place. The XE is back on the road the same visit, with no parts removed and no trip to a garage.
