DPF problems on the Passat B7 and B8
The two Passat generations we deal with most often are the B7 (2010–2015) and the B8 (2015 onwards), covering the 1.6 TDI and 2.0 TDI engines from the EA288 family.
The Passat has a particular profile that makes DPF failure more common than you might expect from what is a relatively large diesel car. The majority of Passats on UK roads are company cars or ex-company cars. They get used for a combination of longer motorway runs, fine for DPF regeneration, and frequent short urban trips when the driver is not on business, commuting locally, or using the car as a second family vehicle. That mixed pattern is often worse for DPF health than either pure city driving or pure motorway driving.
Pure city driving at least tends to be consistent. The ECU can adapt and attempt forced regens on a schedule. Mixed driving catches the filter somewhere in between: regen cycles that get interrupted, partial cleans that do not complete, soot loads that creep up unevenly. By the time a DPF light comes on, the filter has often been struggling for a while.
1.6 TDI versus 2.0 TDI: which is more at risk?
1.6 TDI (EA288): Same characteristics as the Golf 1.6 TDI, cool exhaust temperatures, reliance on active regen cycles, sensitive to urban use. Passat 1.6 TDI owners who use the car mostly in town are at significant risk of DPF blockage.
2.0 TDI (EA288): A stronger engine with better passive regen potential under load. But the 2.0 TDI is not immune, particularly in older vehicles where the DPF has accumulated years of use, or in cars that have been predominantly city-driven.

The Passat Estate has the same DPF setup as the saloon. If you run an Estate, whether as a load carrier or family car, the service is identical and the price is the same: £275.

Once the filter is clear, keeping it clear is largely a matter of driving habits. We will give you brief guidance on this before we leave. It is straightforward, but knowing what the car needs makes a real difference to how long the filter stays clean.
