The replacement bill on a Mazda3
A new DPF on a Mazda3 is not a small job to have done at a dealer. Parts and labour for an OEM filter typically land at £1,200 to £1,500 or more once it is fitted, and the Skyactiv-D's exhaust layout does not make that job quick. Independent garages can usually source an aftermarket part for less, more often £800 to £1,000 fitted, but that is still a substantial bill for a car that, in most cases, has nothing wrong with it beyond a filter full of soot. Most dealers quote for a new filter as soon as the warning light comes on, without first checking whether the existing one will clean up. A blocked filter and a broken one look identical from the driver's seat, and only a proper diagnostic tells the two apart.

Skyactiv-D 1.5 (2015 onward)
The smaller of the two diesels, added to the range in late 2015 and fitted mainly to lower-powered Mazda3s, generally the cheaper of the two to have replaced at a dealer given the smaller filter.
Skyactiv-D 2.2 (2013 onward)
The larger diesel, fitted from launch and shared with the CX-5 and Mazda6, carries a bigger filter and a correspondingly higher replacement bill if it ever comes to that. Mazda's regen strategy is proprietary and less documented than rival systems, so we confirm the exact fault pattern with a diagnostic on both engines rather than assuming. What happens on the day
We come to the Mazda3 wherever it is parked, run a diagnostic to confirm soot load and any stored codes, then introduce the cleaning agent through the filter's existing ports. A controlled engine sequence works the agent through the substrate, we check the differential pressure reading afterwards, and clear the codes once flow is confirmed restored. The whole visit runs to roughly 90 minutes, and the car leaves under its own power.
