Which DPF service does your CX-5 need
Most CX-5s that reach us with a DPF warning need a clean, not a new filter. We charge £275 fixed for the chemical flush, whether you call it a clean or a repair; it is the same process either way. Replacement is only worth considering once a filter is physically cracked or melted rather than simply loaded with soot, and even then an aftermarket part fitted independently usually beats a dealer quote (see our replacement cost comparison).
How the CX-5 gets used
Most of the CX-5s we see across Manchester, Stockport and Bolton do a similar shape of week: a school run, a supermarket trip, a five or six-mile commute into town, repeated most days with the occasional longer drive at the weekend. None of those short legs hold the exhaust hot enough for long enough to let the engine complete a proper regen, so the soot a motorway run would burn off just keeps building.
Some owners tow with the CX-5, caravans, trailers, horseboxes, which does help on the occasional long pull, but it is not frequent enough on its own to offset a week of short runs either side of it. The result is a filter that loads up gradually over months rather than blocking suddenly, which is why the warning light often catches owners by surprise.
What changes after the clean
The warning light goes off, the car pulls cleanly through the rev range again, and limp mode is gone. Fuel economy usually improves too, since a loaded filter makes the engine work harder to push exhaust gas through it. The filter itself stays on the car throughout; we do not remove it, so there is no gasket work and nothing to reseal. Most CX-5s are back on the road the same visit, with a post-clean check confirming the pressure readings are back where they should be before we leave.

Skyactiv-D 2.2 (2012 onward)
Every diesel CX-5 sold in the UK runs Mazda's own 2.2-litre Skyactiv-D. Mild hybrid assistance was added to the CX-5 range at the 2021 facelift, but only on the petrol engines; the diesel has never been paired with it. Mazda's own regen strategy is less publicly documented than the VW Group or PSA systems, so we confirm the exact fault pattern with a diagnostic rather than assuming one. P2463 and P2002 are the codes we see most often on a blocked CX-5 filter, whichever version of the 2.2 is under the bonnet.
