BMW 3 Series DPF cleaning
If your BMW 3 Series has logged fault codes P2463 or P2002, the DPF is the most likely cause. These are the two most common DPF-related codes on F30 and G20 generation 3 Series diesels, and both point to a filter that can no longer clean itself through normal driving.
Cleaning the BMW 3 Series DPF
Manchester DPF Cleaning provides a mobile chemical flush for the 318d, 320d and 330d. We come to you, there is no removal required and the fixed price is £275.
P2463 and P2002: what the fault codes mean
P2463. Diesel particulate filter: soot accumulation high. This code is stored when the soot load inside the DPF exceeds the modelled threshold the ECU is programmed to allow. BMW's engine management estimates soot content by monitoring pressure differential across the filter and tracking driving cycle data. When the calculated load passes its limit, P2463 is logged and the DPF warning light comes on. The car may or may not enter limp mode at this point, depending on how far past the threshold the loading has gone.
P2002. Diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold. This code fires when the ECU determines the filter is no longer capturing particulate matter at adequate efficiency. It often follows P2463 if the soot accumulation issue is not addressed, but it can also appear independently when the filter substrate has degraded or become permanently blocked in sections.
Both codes can be present simultaneously. Neither clears permanently with a standard OBD reset. Clearing the code without addressing the filter simply results in it returning within a short distance. The fault needs to be resolved at the source.
Why the 320d tops our call list
The BMW 320d, across both the F30 and G20 platforms, is consistently the most common vehicle we work on. That is partly a volume effect: the 320d is the highest-selling diesel variant in the 3 Series range by a significant margin. But it is also a function of how these cars are used in practice.
The N47 and B47 engines fitted to the 320d are efficient and well-suited to motorway driving. The difficulty is that the 3 Series attracts a wide range of buyers, many of whom use it predominantly for shorter urban journeys, commuting or the school run. The DPF regeneration cycle cannot complete under those conditions, and soot accumulates faster than the system can burn it off.
The 330d with the N57 or B57 is less commonly affected. The six-cylinder produces higher exhaust temperatures more easily, making passive regeneration more achievable. The 318d with the smaller 1.5-litre N47 four-cylinder is at the opposite end of the sensitivity scale and can block faster still under urban conditions.
Our mobile chemical flush service
We attend your location across Manchester and the surrounding area. The process begins with a diagnostic read to establish current soot loading and confirm which fault codes are stored.
We introduce the cleaning agent directly into the DPF system. It breaks down soot and hydrocarbon deposits across the filter substrate over approximately 60 minutes. We run the engine in a controlled sequence to assist the breakdown, then carry out a post-clean differential pressure check to verify that filter performance has improved.
After a confirmed clean, fault codes are cleared and the DPF warning light goes off. The car should perform and regenerate normally going forward.
The job typically takes around 90 minutes from arrival. No removal of the DPF is required. Fixed price: £275. Call 0161 694 7331 to book.
