The Vivaro has a well-known DPF problem
You are not alone. The Vauxhall Vivaro 1.6 CDTi and 2.0 CDTi are among the most DPF-prone vans on British roads, and the 1.6 BiTurbo is particularly notorious. Renault Trafic owners see the same issues. They share the same platform and drivetrain.
The reason comes down to how these vans are used. Trade vans spend their working lives doing short local jobs. A plumber driving between houses in Salford, an electrician going site to site in Stockport, a plasterer covering a handful of jobs a day around Oldham, none of those routes give the engine time to get properly up to temperature and trigger a clean regen cycle. Soot accumulates in the DPF faster than the engine can burn it off, and sooner or later the filter blocks.
The 1.6 BiTurbo engine makes this worse. Its smaller displacement means it runs at higher loads more often, generating more soot relative to exhaust temperature than a naturally aspirated larger engine would. The DPF on these variants fills up faster and regen cycles are less effective at clearing it.
Signs your Vivaro DPF needs attention
You do not always get a single clear warning. DPF blockage on a Vivaro tends to show up as a combination of symptoms:

Why chemical flush rather than a forced regen or replacement
Many garages will attempt a forced regen first. A forced regen uses diagnostic software to raise exhaust temperatures and try to burn the soot off passively. It works when the DPF is lightly loaded. When the filter is heavily blocked, which is the case for most of the vans we attend, forced regen does not generate enough sustained heat to clear it, and owners end up back at the garage a few weeks later with the same problem.
Replacement is the other option garages push. A new OEM DPF for a Vivaro costs from £500 to over £900 for the part alone, before labour. And if the driving pattern does not change, a new DPF will block just as quickly as the old one.
Our chemical flush works differently. The solution we use is designed to dissolve the compacted ash and soot deposits that a regen cycle cannot shift. It reaches parts of the filter structure that high exhaust temperatures cannot, and it works regardless of how blocked the filter has become. In most cases, one flush returns the DPF to a normal load reading and resolves the warning light.
