Why the Qashqai 1.5 dCi is so prone to DPF problems
The Nissan Qashqai 1.5 dCi uses the K9K engine, a small-capacity diesel that Nissan shares with Renault. It is an efficient engine for motorway driving, but it has a well-known weakness: it produces relatively cool exhaust gases at low speeds and light loads.
That matters because a diesel particulate filter cleans itself through a process called regeneration. During a regen, exhaust temperatures climb high enough to burn off the soot trapped in the filter. For this to happen passively, the car needs to be driven at a steady speed for long enough to get the exhaust system hot. Short hops around town, school runs, and stop-start commutes in Manchester traffic do not give the engine the conditions it needs.
The Qashqai is marketed and used as a family crossover, exactly the kind of vehicle doing exactly the kind of driving that makes passive regen difficult. Add to that the fact that many owners never take their car on a longer run, and you have a vehicle that accumulates soot in its filter faster than it can burn it off.
The most common Qashqai DPF fault codes
The two codes we see on Qashqais week in, week out are P2002 and P2463.
P2463 is the earlier warning: it means the filter's soot load has risen above the threshold the ECU is comfortable with. The car has tried to regen and failed, and the system is now alerting you to the problem. At this stage the filter is blocked but typically still intact and cleanable.
P2002 means the filter's efficiency has dropped below what the ECU expects. This is usually the result of a severe or long-standing blockage. The filter is so full that it can no longer do its job properly. Caught at this stage, a chemical flush can still recover the filter in the large majority of cases.
Left much longer, either code risks limp mode and, eventually, a cracked or irreparably damaged filter, which is a £1,000-plus replacement rather than a £275 clean.
What we do
We do not remove the DPF. Our process is a mobile chemical flush: we connect to the vehicle, run a diagnostic to check soot load and pressure differential data, and then introduce a cleaning agent through the intake side of the filter. The chemical breaks down the compacted soot deposits and allows them to be expelled safely through the exhaust during a controlled regen cycle. The whole process takes around two hours and is carried out wherever the car is parked.
After the flush we run a second diagnostic to confirm the filter is reading clean before we leave.
