Why Freelander 2 DPFs block so frequently
The Freelander 2 runs a Ford-sourced 2.2-litre diesel engine (DW12 series, sometimes badged TD4) shared with Peugeot, Citroën, and Volvo models. It's a capable engine but the DPF is sensitive to driving conditions.
Passive regeneration, the self-cleaning process that burns off soot during long, fast motorway runs, needs exhaust temperatures above 550°C sustained for at least 15–20 minutes. Urban driving rarely gets there. When passive regen fails repeatedly, soot accumulates in the filter until active regen (triggered automatically by the ECU) can't clear it either.
The result is a DPF warning light, limp mode, reduced power, and the familiar sinking feeling when you realise a dealer is about to quote £800 or more for a replacement filter.

What a DPF warning light on your Freelander actually means
The amber DPF light (which looks like a dotted rectangle with dots in it, or sometimes a small exhaust symbol) means the filter is partially blocked. At this stage the ECU will attempt a forced active regeneration. You may notice the engine idling slightly higher, a faint burning smell, and the fan running.
If the light turns red, or if a second warning appears alongside it, the filter is beyond the point where active regen can clear it and the car will enter limp mode. This is the stage where the phone calls start.
In either case, a chemical flush is the correct solution before the car reaches a dealer.

Chemical flush
A specialist DPF cleaning solution is introduced into the filter. Left to dwell, it breaks down compacted soot deposits that a normal regen cycle can't shift.
Regeneration cycle
We run a controlled forced regeneration to flush the dissolved deposits through and out of the filter. Live data confirms the soot load dropping throughout the process.
Post-clean verification
We check differential pressure readings and soot load figures before we leave. You get a before-and-after comparison so you can see the result in the data.
Does this work on the Discovery Sport too?
Yes. The Land Rover Discovery Sport TD4 (2.0 Ingenium diesel, post-2015) has the same DPF sensitivity and is prone to the same blockage pattern. It's used as a family SUV, does a lot of urban and suburban driving, and the DPF suffers accordingly.

Is it worth cleaning or just replacing the filter?
At £275 for a chemical clean versus £600–£1,200 or more for a replacement filter (plus fitting), the clean is almost always worth trying first, particularly on a Freelander 2 that is otherwise mechanically sound.
We do not recommend cleaning a filter on a vehicle with underlying engine problems (injector issues, EGR faults, excessive oil consumption) because those faults will re-block the DPF quickly. If we identify anything like that on the diagnostic, we'll tell you before doing any work.
