When the DPF warning light comes on
The amber DPF warning light usually means the filter is partially blocked and needs a manual regeneration, a long motorway run at speed. If you are not in a position to do that, the soot level will keep rising.
The red warning light, or the DPF light combined with the engine management light, means the blockage is more serious. At this stage, the car will not clear it through driving alone and the filter needs to be cleaned professionally.
Do not ignore either warning. Leaving a blocked DPF too long risks permanent damage to the filter, which then needs replacing: £800 to £1,000 fitted independently with an aftermarket part, or £1,200 to £1,500 or more at a dealer with an OEM part.
Why the tram makes things worse for your diesel
This is a pattern we see across Sale and the Trafford corridor. Residents commute by Metrolink because it is faster and easier. The diesel sits in the drive or on the road and gets used for the shorter local trips, the ones that never push the exhaust temperature high enough to regenerate the filter.
It is not a fault with the car or a sign that something mechanical has gone wrong. It is just how diesels behave when they are used for short trips. The fix is a proper clean, and we can do that where you are.
